CAST LIST

SHANADAR.....Abandoned son of an elf and a nymph who left him on Japeth and Zandrine's doorstep at the same time Zandar was born. Has elven features with silver hair and gray eyes as an adult, and dusky hair as a child. Wears a moonstone medallion around his neck with his name inscribed in elven in it. A powerful magic-user whose unstable personality makes it difficult for others, save a few, to understand him.

YOUNG SHANADAR.....Young version of Shanadar. Main difference besides age is that he has dusky-colored hair.

INFANT SHANADAR

ZANDAR.....Son of Japeth and Zandrine. A talented wood-worker, his friendly, easy-going nature and love for his adopted brother, Shanadar, make him the real hero of this story.

YOUNG ZANDAR.....Young version of Zandar.

INFANT ZANDAR

JAPETH.....Adult human male whose marriage to the elf Zandrine gets them both killed.

ZANDRINE.....Adult elf female whose love for the human Japeth can only spell disaster.

LENDEN.....Adult dwarf/human male crossbreed. A stocky hermit whose past experiences make him seem hard-hearted.

NOMADS.....Gypsy-like humans who live a nomadic life, wandering about in their wagons and making a living of trading.

ERNEST.....Nomad who happens to be Cassandra's grizzled, middle-aged father. He's caring to his own people, but cruel to others.

CASSANDRA.....Ernest's daughter who is nine-years-old when Shanadar is taken by the nomads. Her sympathy towards Shanadar enables her to be one of the few who can truly communicate with him.

ADULT CASSANDRA.....Nineteen-year-old version of Cassandra.

PHEN.....Human, male. An elderly, philosophical sorcerer who sees the good in Shanadar and reluctantly teaches him the ways of magic.

TOWNSPEOPLE.....Human inhabitants of the towns of Aetymere and Bittymere.

EILEEN.....Dignified human female whose hometown is the small Bittymere. Unsure of what she wants, she runs off with Shanadar, only to be later married to a prince.

REDGAR.....Eileen's older brother.

FREDERICK.....Haughty human prince of Spirultare who likes to pick the maidens he wants to marry, then disposes of them when they err. Such was the fate that befell Eileen when Frederick married her and found out, almost six years later, of her "affair" with Shanadar.

ABIGAIL......Human, female. Timid, graying, middle-aged servant whose first loyalty is to the prince.

SHALEN.....Shanadar and Eileen's son whose existence is cut short by Prince Frederick's jealousy. His curious nature makes him endearing to his uncle, but gets him into a lot of trouble with his father.

INFANT SHALEN.....The newborn version of Shalen.

REYAHAN.....Father of the elves. Old as the time the elves were created, but looks as young as their dawning. His face speaks of wisdom, though his thoughts and actions are heavily influenced by the strict beliefs and customs of his people.

MIRINDIR.....Elf. Shanadar's silver-haired father. Cares more about what his people think than for his own child.

CALLIOPHENE.....Nymph, tender of Foristen Spirarnen. Shanadar's mother. Vagarious, she acts on whims only as they suit her.

RATCHINS.....A ratchin is a creature that looks somewhat like a dog or hyena with coarse fur, a mane along its neck and back, and a short tasseled tail. It walks upright and stands about four feet tall.

BARBAROS.....Male ratchin who's fiercely protective of his territory, mate, and young.

THUGS.....A group of five human males who harass people for the fun of it.

HIT MEN.....Three human males who are called on to dispose of those unnecessary wretches that are no longer wanted.

TORMENTORS.....Humans. The tormentors are children who pick on Shanadar as a child.

ADULT TORMENTORS.....The adult versions who pick on Shanadar as an adult.

ELVES.....Elves come in male and female, neither of which has facial hair, and are human-like in appearance and height with some distinctive differences, such as pointed ears and slanted eyes, and immortal beauty. They live among the trees of Foristen Spirarnen in a sacred place called Hazhura, which looks just like the rest of the forest to the casual observer, the only distinguishable features being a hilly ridge and a constant breeze.

GUARDS.....Humans. Attendants to Prince Frederick.

HUMANS.....The human extras.

FADE TO:

EXT. FOREST--CLEARING--HOUSE OF JAPETH AND ZANDRINE--DAY

It is a clear, sunny, spring day in the thick, green forest of Foristen Spirarnen. A modest wooden house stands in the middle of a wide, grassy clearing, and around the house is a well-tended garden.

EXT. FIELD--DAY

Away from the house is a field, where Japeth and a twelve-year-old (YOUNG) ZANDAR are working, preparing it for planting. Zandrine and a twelve-year-old (YOUNG) SHANADAR bring lunch to Japeth and Zandar. Together, they sit down and quietly start eating. Then, suddenly, a group of five masked human THUGS armed with knives and swords ride horses toward them. The thugs stop before the family. Japeth looks up at them.

JAPETH

(friendly)

Good-day, sirs. Care to have a bite with us?

THUG 1

(unfriendly)

We don't need any food, not from you or your feral wife.

Thug 2 leaps from his horse and grabs Zandrine, laying a knife next to her throat. Japeth stands up, helpless.

JAPETH

(shakingly)

What do you want from us?

Thug 1 gets down from his horse and faces him.

THUG 1

You see those over there?

(points at the children)

We don't promote their kind, filthy crossbreed bastard children they are.

JAPETH

My wife and I are rightfully married, therefore--

THUG 1

Your marriage is nothing. It would not even be recognized by your kind or--

(spits at Zandrine)

--her kind. Why do you go on like this? Why didn't you choose to be with a respectable, human woman?

Japeth gets in between him and Zandrine, as close as a threatening Thug 2 will allow.

JAPETH

Because I love her. Isn't that reason enough?

Thug 1 sweeps him aside. He grabs Zandrine's dress and glares menacingly at Japeth.

THUG 1

How can anyone love a worthless, tree-dwelling animal?

(to Thug 3)

Keep those little vermin away from me.

He glares acidly at the children. Thug 3 dismounts and grabs the children, pulling them away while Thug 1 tears Zandrine's dress off. Thugs 4 and 5 dismount and go inside the house to search it for anything of value. Even with the knife still at her throat and her dress torn from her, Zandrine lashes out savagely at Thug 1 by kicking him in the groin. She then grabs Thug 2's arm and twists it about, making him drop the knife and yowl in pain.

THUG 1

Damn elf-bitch.

(to Thug 2)

Get her, you idiot.

Japeth goes to Zandrine's rescue before Thug 2 recovers his knife. While Japeth and his wife focus their attention on Thugs 1 and 2, Thug 3 cuts him down with his sword, causing the children to cry out in horror.

ZANDAR

Father!

Thug 3 turns around and pushes him down.

THUG 3

Stay out of this, or you're next.

In the confusion and the dread of having seen her husband struck a deadly blow, Zandrine is caught again and her throat is cut. Zandrine slumps to the ground beside the dying Japeth, their blood mingling on the ground. Thugs 4 and 5 emerge from the house with some loot. Then the five thugs get on their horses and depart, leaving the children alone, clinging together as they watch their parents die.

EXT. FIELD--DAY

Later that afternoon, Zandar and Shanadar are sitting on the ground near their parents' dead bodies.

ZANDAR

What are we going to do now?

Shanadar appears sullen, his head propped up by his fists. What started out as a bright day is suddenly becoming dark as large, dark thunderclouds come rumbling in and cover the afternoon sky.

LENDEN (O.S.)

What is going on here?

Zandar and Shanadar look up as their neighbor, LENDEN, approaches them. Lenden's expression saddens when he sees the dead bodies.

LENDEN (CONT)

What happened here?

Zandar stands up and goes over to him.

ZANDAR

(stuttering)

Lenden, some people came and--

SHANADAR

(quietly)

Killed them.

Lenden squats beside Shanadar.

LENDEN

Who did?

SHANADAR

Some men did. They came on horses. They had swords and knives. They killed our parents and stole our things. What more do you need to know?

LENDEN

Not much more than that. But what about you? How did you keep from being harmed?

ZANDAR

They just left us alone.

LENDEN

Why did they do that?

SHANADAR

What does it matter? They said the world doesn't need any more of us, and so they just killed our parents. I don't understand it.

Lenden pulls Shanadar up along with him as he stands up.

LENDEN

(to Shanadar)

Well, at least your parents might still be alive.

ZANDAR

Huh?

LENDEN

Shanadar is a foundling, Zandar. He was found on the doorstep the day after your birth.

(a beat)

I'm sorry, I didn't mean for that to slip.

(sighing)

It's not important, anyway. He's still your brother, even if you're not related. Let's just go to my hut, okay? After we bury your parents and take whatever might be left, then we can go.

FLASHBACK:

INT. HOME OF JAPETH AND ZANDRINE--MAIN LIVING AREA--DAY

Japeth carries a newborn (INFANT SHANADAR) wrapped in swaddling clothes from the front door to the bedroom he shares with his wife.

INT. MAIN BEDROOM

Zandrine is lying in the bed with her own newborn son, Zandar, resting in her arms.

JAPETH (O.S.)

Zandrine!

Japeth enters the bedroom with the foundling in his arms. Zandrine looks up inquiringly at him.

ZANDRINE

What is it, Japeth?

Japeth shows her the foundling.

JAPETH

I found a baby just outside our door as I was going out to do some work.

They exchange babies. Zandar squirms and fusses in Japeth's arms; the foundling takes the exchange with quiet dignity. Japeth calms Zandar as Zandrine carefully uncovers the foundling's wraps, revealing a glossy stone medallion with an elven inscription in it, which she handles respectfully.

ZANDRINE

(in awe)

Moonstone--a precious item among my people. The inscription says "Shanadar".

JAPETH

Why would the elves just cast off a newborn baby? I would think they'd be a little more caring to a new member of the family.

Zandrine shrugs.

ZANDRINE

It doesn't make any sense, but I suppose we can keep him. Obviously whoever left him cared enough to leave him here.

JAPETH

As though they knew we'd be suited to the task of raising him.

Zandrine gazes intently at the foundling; he stares back at her quietly.

ZANDRINE

There was probably a reason for leaving him here, but I am not going to guess what. Besides, Zandar could use a playmate him age.

Zandrine motions for Japeth to give her Zandar. She holds both babies, one on each arm. The babies look at each other curiously.

JAPETH

So, the two shall be as brothers, and we shall be their parents. They will be as twins.

ZANDRINE

Inseparable.
