his neck with his name inscribed in elven in it. A powerful
magic-user whose unstable personality makes it difficult for
others, save a few, to understand him.
YOUNG SHANADAR.....Young version of Shanadar. Main difference
besides age is that he has dusky-colored hair.

middle-aged father. He's caring to his own people, but cruel to

ABIGAIL......Human, female. Timid, graying, middle-aged servant

the rest of the forest to the casual observer, the only

CALLING FORTH THE HEAVENS
EXT. WORLD OF ARALON--DAY
The sun rises. Soaring over the land, we see hills and valleys, grasslands, forests, and deserts, mountains and caverns.
EXT. ROYAL PALACE--DAY
An entourage of HUMANS, including JAPETH, ride HORSES away from
the splendid palace of the human kingdom of Spirultare.
Upon their arrival in the elven home of Hazhura in the beautiful
Foristen Spirarnen (the "Forest of the Spirits"), the entourage
is welcomed by REYAHAN and some ELVES, including ZANDRINE.
Japeth cannot take his eyes off Zandrine--it is love at first
EXT. DESERT CANYON--DAY
Looking back over the landscape, we see BARBAROS fighting another
male RATCHIN while a female ratchin looks on in the desert canyon
where they live.
Meanwhile, Japeth and Zandrine ride off together, abandoning
their kind for each other.
EXT. DESERT CANYON--DAY
Barbaros wins the fight and courts his new mate.
The wind blows leaves where Japeth and Zandrine will set up
residence--a secluded spot in a clearing of the forest Foristen
EXT. FOREST--CLEARING--HOUSE OF JAPETH AND ZANDRINE--DAY
It is a clear, sunny, spring day in the thick, green forest of
Foristen Spirarnen. A modest wooden house stands in the middle
of a wide, grassy clearing, and around the house is a well-tended
Away from the house is a field, where Japeth and a twelve-year-old (YOUNG) ZANDAR are working, preparing it for planting.
Zandrine and a twelve-year-old (YOUNG) SHANADAR bring lunch to
Japeth and Zandar. Together, they sit down and quietly start
eating. Then, suddenly, a group of five masked human THUGS armed
with knives and swords ride horses toward them. The thugs stop
before the family. Japeth looks up at them.
Good-day, sirs. Care to have
a bite with us?
We don't need any food, not
from you or your feral wife.
Thug 2 leaps from his horse and grabs Zandrine, laying a knife
next to her throat. Japeth stands up, helpless.
What do you want from us?
Thug 1 gets down from his horse and faces him.
You see those over there?
(points at the children)
We don't promote their kind,
filthy crossbreed bastard
children they are.
My wife and I are rightfully
Your marriage is nothing. It would not even be recognized by your kind or--
(spits at Zandrine)
--her kind. Why do you go on
like this? Why didn't you
choose to be with a
respectable, human woman?
Japeth gets in between him and Zandrine, as close as a
threatening Thug 2 will allow.
Because I love her. Isn't
that reason enough?
Thug 1 sweeps him aside. He grabs Zandrine's dress and glares
menacingly at Japeth.
How can anyone love a worthless, tree-dwelling animal?
(to Thug 3)
Keep those little vermin away from me.
He glares acidly at the children. Thug 3 dismounts and grabs the
children, pulling them away while Thug 1 tears Zandrine's dress
off. Thugs 4 and 5 dismount and go inside the house to search it
for anything of value. Even with the knife still at her throat
and her dress torn from her, Zandrine lashes out savagely at Thug
1 by kicking him in the groin. She then grabs Thug 2's arm and
twists it about, making him drop the knife and yowl in pain.
(to Thug 2)
Get her, you idiot.
Japeth goes to Zandrine's rescue before Thug 2 recovers his
knife. While Japeth and his wife focus their attention on Thugs
1 and 2, Thug 3 cuts him down with his sword, causing the
children to cry out in horror.
Thug 3 turns around and pushes him down.
Stay out of this, or you're
In the confusion and the dread of having seen her husband struck
a deadly blow, Zandrine is caught again and her throat is cut.
Zandrine slumps to the ground beside the dying Japeth, their
blood mingling on the ground. Thugs 4 and 5 emerge from the
house with some loot. Then the five thugs get on their horses
and depart, leaving the children alone, clinging together as they
watch their parents die.
Later that afternoon, Zandar and Shanadar are sitting on the
ground near their parents' dead bodies.
What are we going to do now?
Shanadar appears sullen, his head propped up by his fists. What
started out as a bright day is suddenly becoming dark as large,
dark thunderclouds come rumbling in and cover the afternoon sky.
What is going on here?
Zandar and Shanadar look up as their neighbor, LENDEN, approaches
them. Lenden's expression saddens when he sees the dead bodies.
What happened here?
Zandar stands up and goes over to him.
Lenden, some people came and--
Lenden squats beside Shanadar.
Some men did. They came on
horses. They had swords and
knives. They killed our
parents and stole our things.
What more do you need to know?
Not much more than that. But
what about you? How did you
keep from being harmed?
They just left us alone.
Why did they do that?
What does it matter? They
said the world doesn't need
any more of us, and so they
just killed our parents. I
don't understand it.
Lenden pulls Shanadar up along with him as he stands up.
Well, at least your parents
might still be alive.
Shanadar is a foundling, Zandar. He was found on the doorstep the day after your birth.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean for that to slip.
It's not important, anyway.
He's still your brother, even
if you're not related. Let's
just go to my hut, okay?
After we bury your parents and
take whatever might be left,
then we can go.
INT. HOME OF JAPETH AND ZANDRINE--MAIN LIVING AREA--DAY
Japeth carries a newborn (INFANT SHANADAR) wrapped in
swaddling clothes from the front door to the bedroom he
shares with his wife.
INT. MAIN BEDROOM
Zandrine is lying in the bed with her own newborn son,
Zandar, resting in her arms.
Japeth enters the bedroom with the foundling in his arms.
Zandrine looks up inquiringly at him.
What is it, Japeth?
Japeth shows her the foundling.
I found a baby just outside
our door as I was going out to
do some work.
They exchange babies. Zandar squirms and fusses in Japeth's
arms; the foundling takes the exchange with quiet dignity.
Japeth calms Zandar as Zandrine carefully uncovers the
foundling's wraps, revealing a glossy stone medallion with
an elven inscription in it, which she handles respectfully.
Moonstone--a precious item
among my people. The
inscription says "Shanadar".
Why would the elves just cast
off a newborn baby? I would
think they'd be a little more
caring to a new member of the
It doesn't make any sense, but
I suppose we can keep him.
Obviously whoever left him
cared enough to leave him
As though they knew we'd be

Zandrine gazes intently at the foundling; he stares back at
There was probably a reason
for leaving him here, but I am
not going to guess what.
Besides, Zandar could use a

Zandrine motions for Japeth to give her Zandar. She holds
both babies, one on each arm. The babies look at each other
So, the two shall be as
brothers, and we shall be
their parents. They will be
